‘Respect’ has become the word of the decade. Every school identifies respect as one of its core values. Every educator wants it in the classroom and playground. Every parent wants it in the home. And every person deserves it and needs it in a world that has become frighteningly disrespectful in too many ways.
But what is respect? What does it actually look like in practice? And can we do more to promote respect, respectfully?
Research reveals that many of our best efforts to build respect – through anti-bullying programs, conversations about gender and equality, and punishment of disrespect – may be undermining the very value we seek to build.
In fact, it’s ironic that the typical way we respond to bullies is to become bullies ourselves: we systematically use our power to treat them negatively – often to ‘teach them a lesson’, just like bullies.
This suite of sessions is designed for schools who want to build genuinely, authentically respectful communities by being truly respectful.
MEASURABLE OUTCOMES FOR YOUR SCHOOL
After doing this Respectful Relationships series, your school will:
- understand why bullying programs don’t work, and what to do instead;
- learn new strategies for building respectful relationships between staff, students, and families – based on empirical research rather than best-guesses or disproven theories;
- understand the science of restorative justice – and practical solutions – to enhance and build respectful environments and a culture of deep respect;
- create a school climate where students are more engaged in learning (with the test scores to prove it) and feel happier because they feel safer;
- enjoy stronger relationships between students, staff and parents;
- be more engaged and satisfies with school and with life; and
- even an improvement in academic outcomes!
